Ian Byrne, Deputy Chief Executive gave two presentations to audiences in Jersey. The first was to The Jersey Society of Chartered and Certified Accountants in association with BPP, with the provocative title of "Carbon Accounting ‐ Opportunity or nightmare?" The second was for the Channel Islands Renewable Energy Group (CIREG), on Understanding Performance Gaps in Social Housing - this drew on NEF's analysis of InnovateUK’s BPE Programme, but considered also some of the issues that might apply on an island with limited competition among housebuilders.
Housing and Health - Working in Partnership Conference. Wednesday, 10 May, 2017
Alexandra Steeland, our Project Manager, presented on our Better Housing, Better Health project, which provided home energy checks and grants of up to £2,500 for energy efficiency improvements where someone’s health was being impacted by living in a cold or damp home. Alex spoke about the impact of cold homes, what the project offered, eligibility for the scheme, the challenges faced, the measures installed, results (in terms of the positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing) and also provided an evaluation of the project.

西甲直播吧 Senior Energy Specialist, Dr Thomas Whiffen, presented on: Energy savings in temporary buildings using power line carrier in an adaptable building energy management system. Thom discussed , our two-year product development project supporting TerOpta to develop its TeroLight energy management product. The project undertook two successful summertime trials achieved 48% lighting energy savings at our offices, and 29% AC unit savings at the Costain building at its M1 J34 construction site.

Luke Smith also spoke at this SHAP event, giving a presentation entitled: Application of PAS 1192-3 in social housing context. In particular, Luke introduced iAIM - an integrated approach to asset management - the aim of which is to: review current approaches to asset information management in the social housing sector; identify asset information related challenges and opportunities; identify the role that PAS 1192-3 and other leading asset management standards might play in helping to drive innovation in the sector and support the response to ever-growing demands placed on its assets; and identify best practice and novel means of information handling.

Better Housing, Better Health works across a number of local authorities in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire to provide home energy checks and grants of up to £2,500 for energy efficiency improvements where someone’s health is being impacted by living in a cold or damp home. In particular, Alex spoke about some of the project's challenges and its evaluation and early results. Thom spoke on the ASSEMBLE project in a presentation entitled: Case study findings from a novel BEMS installation for small and temporary commercial buildings. The session:
- Reported on the major findings from two unique BEMS case studies.
- Outlined the use of TerOpta’s innovative BEMS, specifically adapted for small-scale modular implementation.
- Provided details of the power line carrier technology that was used to control connected devices and enable communication throughout the buildings.
- Looked at the lighting and HVAC energy savings that were identified, as well as future energy saving potential.

Kerry's presentation was entitled: Your Energy (Efficiency) Strategy and, as well as asking why Energy Managers should bother, it considered how to build a successful strategy; monitoring its progress; energy efficiency in buildings; and insights and experiences from ESOS. On the first day of this NHF conference, our Principal Energy Specialist, Luke Smith, presented on The understated role of Asset Information Management in Low Energy Retrofit as part of one of the main plenary sessions: Innovation in Asset Management. In particular, Luke spoke about our collaborative iAIM project, which offers a holistic approach to asset information management in the social housing sector and provides detailed insights into their properties' performance and their residents' well-being.
National Energy Foundation Advisory Council meeting. Tuesday, 20 September, 2016
西甲直播吧 annual Advisory Council meeting (20 Sept) was hosted by Wolseley UK at its Sustainable Building Center in Leamington Spa. After a tour of the building by Tim Pollard and welcomes by Kerry Mashford (Chief Executive) and John Walker (Chair of Trustees) delegates were given a presentation on Wolseley and an update on various recent, current and future NEF activities. Further details about these are available in our latest annual Impact Report, which was launched at the meeting.
There were then contributions from Liz Male, David Adams and Peter Caplehorn on the future of domestic refurbishment in the UK. These were followed by breakout sessions to discuss a number of important issues, including: smart energy systems; the energy performance gap; health and housing; Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards; research and development post-Brexit; the UK's fifth carbon budget.
The meeting was joined by Dr Peter Bonfield who gave a useful update on his forthcoming review of consumer advice, protection, standards and enforcement for energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Many thanks to everyone who attended what was a very interesting and useful day discussing the work of the Foundation and important issues relating to the use of energy in buildings.

The Knowledge Transfer Network, the Sustainable Housing Action Partnership and the National Energy Foundation held a free, half-day morning event on new-build social housing. The session included presentations (from Hastoe Housing Association and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust) relating to the findings of the recently-completed £8 million Innovate UK Building Performance Evaluation study comprising 350 homes, most of which were in the social housing sector. The project investigated the success and risk factors in narrowing energy, indoor air quality, comfort, and maintenance performance gaps. 西甲直播吧 Federico Seguro and Luke Smith presented on the recently-published Innovate UK social housing meta-analysis study undertaken by the National Energy Foundation, and its recommendations.

Both our Chief Executive and Technical Director spoke at EcoBuild this year. On the first day, Kerry Mashford chaired a session in the Building Performance Theatre and gave a presentation entitled: Innovate UK BPE- Maximising the Outcomes on the Building Performance Programme. Later that day, she chaired the 'Marketing and consumer engagement strategies for refurbishment' session in the Refurb and Retrofit Theatre. She also gave a presentation on identifying target retrofit markets, understanding motivations and tailoring effective marketing messages entitled: Why refurbish? – markets, motives and messages.
On the second day, Malcolm Hanna was one of the speakers in the 'Successful energy management strategies' session in the Building Performance Theatre. His presentation was entitled: The role of DECs, ESOS and other regulation in identifying energy saving opportunities.

Kerry Mashford, took part in this Public Policy Exchange event and was one of a number of leading Chief Executives who presented. Her talk Closing the Energy Performance Loop was part of the symposium, which:
- Considered the four themes set out in the Government Consultation ‘Cutting the costs of keeping warm’.
- Discussed how public health outcomes on fuel poverty can be achieved through public health directors.
- Explored how to develop a strategic approach to building energy efficiency in all housing and consider other housing initiatives.
- Evaluated Government initiatives such as the Green Deal, the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and the Big Energy Saving Network.
- Shared knowledge on how local authorities, the NHS, the housing sector and others can work together to tackle fuel poverty.

VolDECs are a new and innovative voluntary operational energy rating scheme, initially designed for commercial office buildings. They are a not-for-profit scheme and are based on relatively simple data, making them inexpensive and quick to produce. VolDECs solve the landlord and tenant energy split and the lack of relevant benchmarks to enable performance to be measured and compared sensibly and consistently.

He spoke about the fact that many commercial office buildings don’t have an appropriate means of measuring and highlighting energy performance in a relatively simple and consistent way, the issues associated with the landlord and tenant energy split and the lack of relevant benchmarks to enable performance to be measured and compared sensibly and consistently. Working with Building Energy Solutions and leading commercial property company Legal & General, the Foundation has developed a solution that addresses these issues, and is inexpensive and quick to produce.

This workshop was an initial meeting of a project the Foundation is undertaking, in collaboration with and funded by SEMLEP. We convened the meeting with stakeholders from across the industry at the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership’s (SEMLEP) offices in Cranfield. We presented Building Higher Energy-Performing New 西甲直播吧s with the aim of promoting and increasing understanding of the need and opportunity to build higher energy-performing new homes (HEP 西甲直播吧s). HEP 西甲直播吧s runs from September 2014 to February 2015 and is about providing research and discussions on the topic for beneficiaries throughout the SEMLEP region. SEMLEP is the host to 11 local authorities. Between them, they plan to build 86,000 new homes up to 2021. Building these homes to high energy performing standards offers the potential to reduce long-term embedded carbon in the region’s housing stock.

With the next 西甲直播吧 Energy Conservation Act (HECA) reporting deadline on 31 March 2015, councils will have to report on actions from their last reports, set out their energy-saving ambitions and targets, and outline the key actions and partnerships needed to deliver them.
We held a special workshop for local authorities on the future direction of domestic energy-saving and the action needed to tackle fuel poverty.
